Malawi’s gambling industry generates K12bn annually, MAGLA reveals
The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has revealed that the country’s gambling industry is generating at least K12 billion annually, with K4.5 billion channeled directly to the government.
According to Zodiak, MAGLA’s Acting Director of Legal and Regulatory Services, Owen Chuma, shared these figures during a media interface in Mzuzu. He emphasized the growing significance of the gambling sector, citing a World Health Organization (WHO) projection that the global gambling industry will contribute $700 billion to the economy by 2028.
Chuma also urged the media to play a role in promoting responsible gambling, stressing that it should be seen as a form of entertainment rather than a source of income. His remarks come amid growing concerns about problem gambling and its social consequences.
Nyika Media Club chairperson, Feston Malekezo, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for media outlets to disseminate messages on responsible gambling. He noted that increased awareness could help mitigate the risk of gambling-related suicides, which have been linked to financial losses in betting and gaming activities.
With the gambling industry expanding rapidly in Malawi, stakeholders are pushing for a balanced approach that ensures economic benefits while safeguarding vulnerable players.
