Letsile Tebogo secures Botswana's first Olympic gold in 200m victory
Letsile Tebogo of Botswana etched his name into Olympic history on Thursday, becoming the first African to win gold in the men's 200 meters at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The 21-year-old sensation stormed to victory in a blistering time of 19.46 seconds, shattering the African record in the process. He outpaced American athletes Kenny Bednarek, who took silver with a time of 19.62 seconds, and Noah Lyles, the reigning 100m champion, who finished third in 19.70 seconds.
Tebogo’s triumph marks a golden moment for Botswana, securing the nation’s first-ever Olympic gold medal. The young sprinter showcased exceptional control throughout the race, ultimately crossing the finish line with a comfortable margin.
After his victory, Tebogo held up his shoe in a poignant gesture, paying tribute to his late mother.
