Uruguay gambling revenue hits record $628 million in 2024
Uruguay’s National Directorate of Lotteries and Quinielas (DNLQ) reported a record USD 628 million in gambling revenue for 2024, up USD 62 million from the previous year. Key games include Quiniela, Tómbola, Raspadita, and 5 de Oro Revancha, but Supermatch, a sports betting platform managed by the Banca de Quinielas, led in revenue.
DNLQ funds support public services like health, education, and social programs. Experts stress the need for responsible gambling measures, calling for stronger regulations and awareness campaigns.
While digital expansion is shaping the industry, a bill to regulate online gambling has been stalled in the Chamber of Deputies since 2022. Supermatch remains the only authorized sports betting platform under a state monopoly.
The DNLQ ensures transparency and player protection while modernizing operations. Major lottery events in early 2024 included Revancha de Reyes, with an $80 million jackpot, and the traditional year-end Lotería de Fin de Año, one of the most anticipated draws in the country.
The industry’s growth underscores its economic and social importance but also presents regulatory challenges.
