Uganda Launches University Esports Championships to Spotlight Emerging Talent

Uganda has hosted its first University Esports Championships in Kampala, giving students from across the country an official platform to showcase their skills in competitive gaming.

The event took place on September 27–28 at Kampala International University Hostel and brought together teams from several universities. Students competed in popular titles including Tekken 8, Motor Combat, FIFA, Valorant and PUBG Mobile. The tournament drew participants from multiple regions and highlighted the growing enthusiasm for esports among Ugandan youth.

Organized by the Uganda Esports and Gaming Federation (UEGF), the championships are designed to create a formal pathway for campus gamers and strengthen the local esports ecosystem. The Federation described the launch as a turning point, noting that it offers young players a chance to gain national recognition and build competitive careers.

Beyond competition, the event focused on community building, knowledge sharing and engaging industry stakeholders. Observers said its success could encourage the integration of esports into university programs and extracurricular activities, laying the groundwork for a stronger gaming culture in the country.

With this initiative, Uganda joins other African nations investing in grassroots esports. Organizers expect the tournament to grow in future editions, expanding its reach, prize pools and opportunities for emerging talent.
