Tunisia to regulate sports betting with new law
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Kamel Déguiche, announced on Wednesday during hearings at the Assembly of People's Representatives that a new law will soon be adopted to regulate and control sports betting in Tunisia.
The declaration was made in response to a question from MP Rome Segaier about Promosport, the Sports Promotion Company that currently holds a monopoly on organizing sports prediction competitions in the country, which is facing challenges due to the spread of illegal parallel sports betting.
The annual revenues of offshore operators active in Tunisia are estimated between 3 and 7 million dinars, which jeopardizes Promosport's profitability. However, the minister sought to relativize the situation, stating that "considering the Promosport company is in a catastrophic situation is a very exaggerated description."
According to Kamel Déguiche, Promosport has no debts to other public institutions and even contributes to the financing of numerous youth and sports projects. Nevertheless, the decline in Promosport's profits has so far prevented the conclusion of an agreement on the digitization and modernization of its activities, as well as the construction of 100 sports grounds.
