Tierra del Fuego bill targets youth exposure to online betting and virtual casinos

A new bill in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego province seeks to create a comprehensive policy framework to prevent problem gambling among children and adolescents, with a focus on online betting platforms, virtual casinos, digital wallets and fake user profiles.

Lawmakers in Tierra del Fuego have introduced a new bill aimed at addressing the growing risks of online gambling among children and teenagers. The initiative was submitted by Federico Greve and Myriam Martínez of the FORJA bloc and registered under matter No. 311/26 in the provincial legislature.

The bill proposes an integrated approach to the problematic use of online betting and virtual gambling platforms among young people. According to its authors, the initiative responds to the spread of online gambling as a form of remote entertainment that often happens without adult supervision. They warned that minors are increasingly exposed to virtual casinos and illegal betting sites through digital wallets, fake profiles and platforms that avoid identity controls.

The proposal has been referred to Innovation Committee No. 9 of the Tierra del Fuego Legislature. It has not yet become law, but it already reflects a wider concern in Argentina over the rapid growth of youth participation in online betting and the difficulty of controlling illegal digital gambling platforms.

A central part of the bill is the protection of mental health. Greve and Martínez argue that the problem should be addressed through an interdisciplinary strategy and coordinated public policies, rather than only through sanctions. The initiative would allow the provincial executive branch to designate an enforcement authority responsible for coordinating institutional actions.

The education system plays a key role in the proposal. The bill seeks to include financial education in Tierra del Fuego’s school curriculum in order to reduce impulsive behaviour linked to games of chance. It also provides for specialised training for professionals working in education, health, security and justice, as well as workshops designed to encourage critical reflection among students.

The initiative also includes support measures for families. The provincial government would be responsible for developing digital educational resources and providing guidance to parents and guardians on how to protect children from online gambling risks. The bill also proposes youth participation spaces and the promotion of traditional recreational activities away from digital devices.

On regulation and enforcement, the proposal introduces stricter controls over the reach of gambling platforms in Tierra del Fuego. It includes a full ban on advertising and promotion of virtual gambling attractions, instructions for financial entities to verify the identity of legal representatives linked to accounts, and the creation of official reporting channels for illegal betting websites.

The three branches of the provincial state would be required to provide links and contact numbers on their official portals so that citizens can report illegal gambling platforms more easily. This measure is designed to make enforcement more accessible and to involve the public in identifying online betting sites targeting minors or operating without authorisation.

The Tierra del Fuego bill comes as Argentina is debating similar measures at national level. The federal government has also submitted a broader proposal to combat illegal online betting and prevent gambling addiction, with special attention to minors, advertising restrictions, financial controls and criminal penalties for unauthorised operators.

For Tierra del Fuego, the new bill signals a shift from isolated prevention campaigns toward a more structured policy response. If approved, it could create a provincial model focused on education, family support, digital oversight and stronger reporting tools. The main challenge will be implementation, especially in a market where many online betting platforms operate across provincial and national borders.
