The excise tax on sports betting and lotteries has increased in Kenya since July 1, 2023. The corresponding provision is contained in the Financial Bill for 2023, adopted by the country's parliament and signed by the country's president, William Ruto.
According to the content of the document, the tax was increased from the previous 7.5% to 12.5%. Previously, the Finance Bill proposed to raise the excise tax on rates to 20%, as was the case in 2019. But after discussion by parliamentarians, it was decided not to resort to such radical measures.
It should also be noted that in the event that their bets win, Kenyan licensed betting customers will also be required to pay tax on the winnings, which will be 20% of the difference between the payout and the amount wagered, including deduction.
