Tanzania's Gaming Board suspends licenses to prepare for Electronic Monitoring System launch
The Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) has announced a temporary suspension of licenses for new Slot Machines and Route Operations due to increasing regulatory challenges. This decision aims to allow the GBT to finalize the implementation of an Electronic Monitoring System designed to oversee slot machine operations more effectively.
GBT Director General James Mbalwe also revealed that by March 2025, the board plans to eliminate the use of cash in gaming, opting for alternative payment methods. This change comes in response to issues with damaged coins frequently encountered in gaming machines.
Gambling activities in Tanzania are governed by the Betting, Lotteries and Gaming Act No. 4 of 2003 and its 2016 amendment, which together form the legal framework for various gambling operations, including lotteries and casinos. The GBT is responsible for ensuring compliance with these regulations, issuing licenses, and monitoring gambling establishments to promote responsible gaming practices.
