Tanzania targets corruption in gambling and sports with new legislative bill
The Tanzanian government has introduced a new bill aimed at enhancing the fight against corruption, particularly in gambling, sports, entertainment and elections.
The Prevention and Combating of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was presented to Parliament on Monday by Minister of State in the President’s Office, George Simbachawene.
This proposed legislation introduces a new section, "Part V A," aimed at addressing corrupt activities within the sports and gaming industries. According to the amendment, individuals convicted of corruption in these fields will be subject to fines between three and twenty million shillings, imprisonment for a period of three to five years, or both. Similar consequences apply to corruption related to elections. For more serious violations, fines and prison sentences could be substantially increased.
The Parliamentary Governance and Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee has expressed support for the proposed amendments, highlighting the need to align them with existing laws, such as the Proceeds of Crime Act. The committee also recommended adjustments to ensure equitable treatment across all sports disciplines in the bill's definitions.
Overall, this legislative initiative reflects Tanzania's commitment to addressing corruption and promoting good governance in the face of ongoing challenges.
