Tanzania reports 193bn/- collection from online betting and e-commerce
The Tanzanian government has generated 192.78 billion Tanzanian shillings ($73.8 million USD) from online businesses — mainly from the betting sector — between July 2024 and March 2025, according to the Daily News. The revenue was collected from 1,820 online companies that have officially registered with the authorities.
Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Exaud Kigahe, revealed the figures today while addressing Parliament in Dodoma. He was responding to a question from Special Seats MP (CCM) Dr. Ritta Kabati, who sought clarification on the government's recognition of online businesses, the number of registered entities, and the revenue earned from the sector.
“To ensure we adapt to these technological changes, the government has prepared a National Electronic Commerce Strategy, which is now in its final stages of implementation,” Kigahe stated during the parliamentary session.
He added that the new strategy aims to improve ICT infrastructure, strengthen policies, laws, and regulations, enhance communication, transportation, and logistics services, and develop online transaction systems. Furthermore, the government plans to raise public awareness about e-commerce to encourage wider use of digital platforms for business activities.
