Tanzania Bans Foreigners from Operating Slot Machines
On July 25, 2025, the Minister of Industry and Trade of Tanzania signed a directive banning foreign nationals from operating 15 types of business in the country. This step was taken as part of protecting the domestic economy from foreign competition.
The government has banned activities traditionally dominated by Tanzanians, including beauty salons, small shops, and cafes. However, the list also includes the mobile money transfer sector, small-scale mining, operating slot machines outside licensed casinos, and owning and operating micro and small businesses.
For violating the ban, foreigners can receive a:
- Fine, the minimum amount of which is 10 million Tanzanian shillings.
- Imprisonment for up to six months.
- Revocation of visa or residence permit.
For assisting foreigners in carrying out prohibited activities or acting as their representatives, Tanzanian citizens can receive:
- A fine of 5 million Tanzanian shillings.
- Imprisonment for up to 3 months.
For those with a valid license, the government offers a grace period until the license expires, but once it expires, there is no provision for renewal.
