South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal introduces new entity for gambling oversight

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) has officially launched a new public entity, the KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority (KZNERA), following the merger of the KZN Liquor Authority and the KZN Gaming and Betting Board. The announcement was made on Tuesday in Ballito, north of Durban, by MEC Rev. Musa Zondi.

This merger is part of a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing operational efficiency within the province. MEC Zondi highlighted that the consolidation of these entities will eliminate redundancies and foster a more coordinated approach to economic development in KwaZulu-Natal. "By merging these entities, we’re cutting out unnecessary overlap and creating a more coordinated effort to drive economic progress in our province," he stated.

KZNERA will oversee the regulation of the gambling and liquor industries in the province, ensuring compliance with legal standards while promoting economic growth. The new authority will be led by Chairperson Ms. Mbali Myeni and Interim CEO Ms. Portia Baloyi.

The restructuring initiative has resulted in the successful merger of four organizations into two new entities, signaling a significant step towards improved governance and service delivery in KwaZulu-Natal. MEC Zondi urged the public to support these organizations in their mission to positively impact the province. "This is a new beginning, and we must all work together to ensure these entities fulfill their potential," he said.

With the establishment of KZNERA, KwaZulu-Natal is poised to make substantial advancements in economic growth and development, paving the way for a prosperous future for the region.
