South African National Lottery celebrates second-largest jackpot winner in history
A lucky Lotto jackpot winner has officially claimed over R100 million (approximately $5.5 million USD) from the draw held on August 3, 2024. Ithuba, the operator of the National Lottery, confirmed the news on August 26 via their official X account, stating that the winner had finally come forward, ending the search.
The winning ticket was purchased at a Pick n Pay store in Hazeldean Square, Pretoria and remained unclaimed for more than three weeks. During this period, Ithuba made several appeals to National Lottery participants in Pretoria, urging them to check their tickets.
The winner, a woman who has chosen to remain anonymous, has opted for privacy despite her life-changing windfall.
Ithuba CEO Charmaine Mabuza expressed her excitement over the win, especially as it coincides with Women’s Month. "We are overjoyed to celebrate this monumental win with our latest jackpot winner. The R100 million Lotto jackpot is a life-changing amount and highlights the excitement and opportunities the South African National Lottery offers to participants across the country," Mabuza said.
This jackpot marks the second-largest in Lotto history, following a R110 million jackpot shared by four winners in January 2018.
