South Africa ranks 14th in Global Cryptocurrency Ownership Rate in 2024
A recent report by Triple A has revealed that South Africa is among the top 30 countries globally with the highest cryptocurrency ownership rates in 2024. South Africa ranks 14th globally in terms of cryptocurrency ownership, reflecting a substantial presence of digital currencies within the country. 12.4% of the South African population owns cryptocurrencies.
The report highlights that the United Arab Emirates and Singapore have the highest ownership rates, with 25.3% and 24.4% of their populations owning cryptocurrencies, respectively. This is a testament to the favorable regulatory environments and widespread adoption of blockchain technology in these countries.
Globally, the number of people owning cryptocurrencies has seen a significant increase. In 2024, 562 million people worldwide own digital currencies, representing a 33.8% rise from the 460 million in 2023.
Asia remains the continent with the most cryptocurrency owners, with 326.8 million people, a 21.8% increase from 268.2 million in the previous year.
The African continent also saw a modest increase in cryptocurrency ownership, with 43.5 million people owning digital currencies in 2024, a rise of 8.5% from 40.1 million in the previous year.
These statistics underscore the growing popularity of digital currencies and their increasing adoption across the world.
