The South African government is preparing to launch a National Gambling Council as part of efforts to enhance regulatory oversight and curb non-compliant gambling advertising, according to a report by News24.

The new council, expected to be operational later this year, will coordinate regulatory activities across the country and advise the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition on key policy matters. This move comes amid growing concern over the rise in misleading or unlawful advertising in the gambling sector, particularly online.

Speaking to News24, Minister Ebrahim Patel emphasized the need to strengthen the enforcement of existing gambling laws, particularly in the digital space. The proposed council will bring together representatives from all nine provinces, national regulators, and law enforcement agencies to ensure a unified approach to industry oversight.

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition is also reviewing the National Gambling Act to ensure it remains effective in addressing emerging trends and technologies in the gambling landscape. Patel noted that while the gambling industry contributes significantly to the economy, it must operate responsibly and within legal boundaries.

The crackdown includes increased scrutiny of gambling ads that fail to comply with regulatory standards or target vulnerable populations. The Advertising Regulatory Board and provincial authorities will work closely with the council to monitor and act against such violations.

The initiative signals a renewed commitment by the government to balance economic interests with consumer protection in the fast-evolving gambling environment.
