South Africa launches public portal to verify licensed gambling operators

South Africa’s National Gambling Board has launched a new online portal that allows the public to check whether a gambling operator is legally licensed, in a move aimed at curbing illegal gambling and improving regulatory transparency across the market.

The National Gambling Board announced the launch on April 8, saying the platform provides a consolidated and comprehensive list of legal and verified licensed gambling operators in South Africa. According to the Board, the initiative is meant to help consumers distinguish between regulated operators and illegal offerings before placing bets or using gambling services.

Local reporting says the portal was launched in Pretoria and developed in cooperation with Provincial Licensing Authorities, with the database intended to be regularly updated. That gives the tool practical importance for both land-based and online gambling users, who can now check whether an operator is officially recognized within South Africa’s regulated framework.

The NGB has framed the portal as part of a broader campaign against illegal and offshore gambling activity, which it says exposes users to fraud, financial losses and weak consumer protection. By steering the public toward licensed operators, the regulator is also trying to reinforce responsible gambling and strengthen confidence in the supervised segment of the market.

For South Africa’s gambling sector, the significance of the new portal lies in its preventive role. Rather than relying only on enforcement after violations occur, the regulator is giving consumers a direct verification tool that can make illegal operators easier to avoid and make regulatory oversight more visible in everyday gambling activity. This final point is an inference based on the Board’s stated goals and the structure of the portal.
