Sir Alex Ferguson taken to hospital before Manchester United’s match against Liverpool
Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was taken to hospital after feeling unwell at Old Trafford before the Premier League match against Liverpool. Reports described the move as precautionary, with the 84-year-old conscious and undergoing checks.
Sir Alex Ferguson was taken to hospital on May 3 after feeling unwell at Old Trafford before Manchester United’s Premier League match against Liverpool. The former United manager had been at the stadium to watch one of English football’s biggest fixtures, but was attended to before kick-off and then taken for medical checks. Sky Sports News reported that Ferguson was conscious and that the hospital visit was precautionary.
The incident caused concern among Manchester United supporters and staff, especially given Ferguson’s age and his previous health history. In 2018, he underwent emergency surgery after suffering a brain haemorrhage, later making a recovery and returning to Old Trafford. No detailed medical update was released immediately after the latest incident.
Manchester United went on to beat Liverpool 3-2. After the match, United head coach Michael Carrick said he had heard about Ferguson’s condition before the game and was “affected” by the news. Carrick added that he hoped the result would give the former manager a boost once he heard about it.
Ferguson remains one of the most influential figures in Manchester United’s history. He managed the club from 1986 until 2013, overseeing 1,500 matches and leading the team to 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League triumphs. He was also a regular presence at United matches after retirement and served as a club ambassador until 2025.
For Manchester United, the health scare added an emotional layer to a major Premier League fixture. While early reports suggested there was no immediate danger, the lack of further public updates means the situation will continue to be followed closely by fans. The episode also underlined Ferguson’s lasting place at Old Trafford, where even years after leaving the dugout he remains a central symbol of the club’s modern identity.
