Ronaldo Breaks Records as Portugal Crushes Uzbekistan at World Cup 2026
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in Portugal’s 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, becoming the first player to score at six World Cups and adding another chapter to his long-running rivalry with Lionel Messi.
Cristiano Ronaldo has produced one of the defining individual moments of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring twice as Portugal defeated Uzbekistan 5-0 in Group K.
The match in Houston became much more than a routine group-stage victory. Ronaldo’s brace rewrote several World Cup records, revived Portugal’s campaign after a disappointing opening draw with DR Congo and once again placed the Ronaldo-Messi rivalry at the centre of the tournament narrative.
Portugal started quickly. Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, finishing from close range after a low delivery from João Cancelo. Nuno Mendes doubled the lead with a set-piece strike in the 17th minute before Ronaldo added his second goal in the 39th minute after a pass from Bruno Fernandes. In the second half, an own goal from Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov and a late finish from Rafael Leão completed Portugal’s 5-0 win.
The first Ronaldo goal was historic on its own. It made him the first player to score at six different FIFA World Cups. He had previously scored in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022, and his goal against Uzbekistan added 2026 to that sequence. It is a record that may be extremely difficult to match, let alone surpass.
His second goal brought another milestone. Ronaldo moved to 10 career World Cup goals, overtaking Eusébio as Portugal’s all-time leading scorer at the tournament. Eusébio’s nine-goal mark had stood since the 1966 World Cup, where he led Portugal to its best-ever finish.
Ronaldo also became the oldest player to score a brace in a World Cup match. At 41 years old, he surpassed the mark set only a day earlier by Lionel Messi, who had scored twice for Argentina against Austria. It was another reminder that the two greatest players of their generation are still rewriting records at the same tournament.
The Messi comparison did not stop there. Ronaldo also matched Messi in the record for the longest span between a player’s first and latest World Cup goals. Both players first scored at the 2006 World Cup and both have now scored again in 2026, extending their scoring timelines across two decades.
Another statistical record came through the age gap between Ronaldo and Uzbekistan midfielder Bekhruzhon Karimov, who was born in 2007. Their presence on the pitch created one of the largest recorded age differences between opposing players in a World Cup match, underlining the extraordinary longevity of the Portuguese captain.
For Portugal, the result was also crucial in sporting terms. The team moved to four points in Group K and strengthened its position in the race for the knockout stage. Uzbekistan, playing in its first World Cup, suffered a second consecutive defeat and was left without points.
The performance also changed the mood around Ronaldo. After Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo, the 41-year-old forward faced criticism over his role in the starting lineup. Against Uzbekistan, he responded in the most direct way possible: goals, leadership and records.
For the sports betting industry, this type of match is a strong example of how player narratives influence market attention during major tournaments. Ronaldo’s form, age, goal records and comparison with Messi can affect fan engagement, media coverage and special markets around goalscorers, milestones and team progression. At the same time, such high-profile matches also increase the need for accurate statistics, reliable data feeds and responsible betting controls.
The conclusion is clear: Portugal needed a convincing response, and Ronaldo delivered it. His brace against Uzbekistan was not only a personal comeback, but a historic World Cup moment. At 41, he remains a central figure in the tournament — and the record race with Messi continues to shape the story of World Cup 2026.
