Rio de Janeiro targets influencers promoting online betting platforms

The government of Rio de Janeiro is set to take regulatory action against influencers and companies promoting online betting platforms. According to Veja, over 300 entities, including well-known digital personalities like Virginia Fonseca, will be officially notified starting Monday.

The initiative is being led by the State Secretariat for Consumer Protection and Procon-RJ, the state’s consumer protection agency. Authorities will demand that influencers and betting platforms comply with stricter consumer rights standards. Key requirements include providing clear and transparent information about betting services, implementing safeguards to protect minors, and issuing disclaimers about the risks associated with gambling.

Officials said the move is intended to increase accountability in a rapidly growing and largely unregulated sector. They emphasized the need for social media figures and digital platforms to take greater responsibility for how betting is advertised, especially to vulnerable groups.
