Premier League secures fifth Champions League place for 2026/27 season

Five English clubs will qualify for the league phase of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League through the Premier League, after England secured one of UEFA’s two extra European Performance Spots for next season.

The Premier League has officially secured an additional Champions League berth for 2026/27, meaning the team that finishes fifth in the English top flight will also qualify directly for the competition’s league phase. Under UEFA’s current format, the two associations with the best collective results in the ongoing European club season receive one extra place each, and England is now assured of being one of those two associations.

UEFA’s latest update shows England leading the 2025/26 association club coefficient table, ahead of Spain, with the extra place awarded to the next-best domestic league finisher not already qualified automatically. In practical terms, that turns the Premier League’s top five into Champions League places for the 2026/27 edition, rather than the usual top four.

UEFA also explained that the European Performance Spot is based on the average number of coefficient points collected by clubs from each association in this season’s men’s UEFA competitions. That system has again rewarded the strong overall performance of English clubs in Europe and ensured the Premier League a fifth direct path into the continent’s top tournament.

For the Premier League, the change significantly raises the importance of the race for fifth place. What would normally be the last Europa League position now becomes a Champions League berth, increasing both the sporting and financial stakes in the final stretch of the season. It also reinforces the strength of English clubs across UEFA competitions, with that collective performance now delivering a direct domestic reward.
