Premier League Matchweek 8: Man City Suffer First Defeat, Arsenal Close Gap and Man United Collapse
The eighth round of the 2026/27 Premier League season saw Manchester City's perfect run end against Aston Villa, Arsenal draw level on points with the leaders and Manchester United suffer a humiliating 3–0 home defeat to Bournemouth.
The eighth Premier League matchweek, played from October 23 to 25, produced 19 goals across ten matches, with unexpected results reshaping the title race and increasing pressure on several struggling clubs.
The biggest surprise came at Villa Park, where Aston Villa defeated previously unbeaten Manchester City 2–1. Nicolas Jackson scored twice for the hosts, while Erling Haaland netted City's only goal. The result ended City's seven-match winning streak and gave their closest rivals an opportunity to close the gap.
Arsenal capitalised with a 2–0 victory over Everton, moving level with City on 21 points. The defending champions remain second on goal difference, keeping the title race finely balanced.
Manchester United's crisis deepened following a 3–0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford. Rayan and Marcus Tavernier scored before halftime, with Evanilson adding a third in the second half. Manager Michael Carrick's decision to leave Bruno Fernandes out of the starting lineup failed to produce a response, leaving United 16th with just seven points from eight matches.
Tottenham delivered another major surprise by defeating Chelsea 2–0 at Stamford Bridge. An own goal by goalkeeper Mike Penders and a late strike from Mathys Tel secured Spurs' second consecutive league victory following their difficult start to the season.
Liverpool strengthened their position with a 2–0 win over Brighton, helped by a Pascal Groß own goal and Alexander Isak's third consecutive league scoring appearance. The Reds moved into fourth place, one point behind Brighton.
Elsewhere, Newcastle beat Crystal Palace 2–0, Fulham edged Coventry 1–0, while Ipswich–Nottingham Forest and Hull–Brentford both finished 1–1. Sunderland and Leeds played out a goalless draw.
With Manchester City's unbeaten run over and Arsenal level on points, the championship race has become more competitive. Meanwhile, Manchester United's continuing struggles and Tottenham's recent recovery could prove decisive storylines in the coming weeks.
