Premier League 2026/27 begins with shocks as Arsenal impress and Manchester United and Tottenham stumble

The new Premier League season opened with an eventful first round featuring convincing wins for Arsenal and Brighton, dramatic victories for Manchester City and Chelsea, and major early setbacks for Manchester United, Tottenham and Aston Villa.

The 2026/27 Premier League season is underway, and the opening round immediately produced several unexpected results. All 20 clubs played between August 21 and 24, with reigning champions Arsenal starting their title defence confidently, promoted Hull City and Ipswich Town celebrating victories, and Manchester United and Tottenham suffering damaging opening defeats.

Arsenal opened the campaign on Friday with a comfortable 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard scored for Mikel Arteta’s side, which controlled the match and extended its unbeaten Premier League home run against promoted teams to 46 matches. The result also marked Arteta’s 150th Premier League victory as a manager.

One of the weekend’s biggest surprises followed at Hull. Back in the Premier League, Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0, with centre-backs Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scoring from set pieces. United had more possession but struggled to create clear opportunities in Michael Carrick’s first league match of the new campaign. For Hull, it was a first league victory over Manchester United since 1974 and an impressive statement on their return to the top flight.

Tottenham endured an equally difficult start. Despite another expensive summer of recruitment, Spurs were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Brentford. Keane Lewis-Potter and Vitaly Janelt put the hosts two goals ahead before half-time, while Michael Kayode added the third shortly after the restart. Brentford could even have won by a larger margin, with Igor Thiago hitting the post from a penalty.

The heaviest defeat of Matchweek 1 came at the Amex Stadium, where Brighton demolished Aston Villa 4-0. Villa conceded four times inside the opening 31 minutes, with Maxim De Cuyper involved in the early breakthrough and Jack Hinshelwood scoring twice in quick succession. João Gomes was then sent off before half-time, completing a disastrous afternoon for Unai Emery’s team. The four-goal margin left Brighton at the top of the early Premier League table on goal difference.

Manchester City also looked in danger of beginning the season with a defeat. Bournemouth led at the Etihad through Marcus Tavernier from the 26th minute and remained ahead until the closing stages. City finally equalised when Marc Guehi scored in the 84th minute, before Josko Gvardiol struck in stoppage time to complete a 2-1 comeback victory in Enzo Maresca’s first Premier League match as City manager.

Liverpool, meanwhile, dropped two points in a dramatic 2-2 draw at Newcastle United. Newcastle twice went ahead through Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock, while Cody Gakpo responded for Liverpool before Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty deep into stoppage time. The match also brought Alexander Isak back to St James’ Park in Liverpool colours following his high-profile move from Newcastle.

Chelsea completed the round on Monday with another five-goal match, winning 3-2 away to Fulham in Xabi Alonso’s first competitive fixture in charge. João Pedro scored inside the opening minute, while summer signing Morgan Rogers found the net on his debut and Cole Palmer added Chelsea’s third. Fulham remained competitive until the end, but Chelsea left Craven Cottage with all three points.

Elsewhere, Everton beat Crystal Palace 2-0, Ipswich Town defeated Sunderland 2-1 with a late Jack Clarke winner, and Leeds United won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest through an Anton Stach free-kick. The performances of Hull and Ipswich were particularly notable: two of the three promoted clubs collected maximum points immediately, while Coventry’s return to the Premier League began with defeat against the champions.

After only one round it is far too early to draw conclusions about the title race, but the opening weekend has already established several storylines. Arsenal looked ready for another challenge at the top, Manchester City showed their ability to recover under Maresca and Chelsea’s reshaped attack produced immediate results. At the other end of the spectrum, Manchester United, Tottenham and Aston Villa face early pressure to respond after poor first performances.

The second round will quickly test whether those results were isolated opening-day surprises. Manchester United host Ipswich, Tottenham face Newcastle, Chelsea meet Brighton and Arsenal travel to Aston Villa, while Manchester City visit Crystal Palace. With the transfer window also approaching its final days, the opening weeks of the 2026/27 Premier League season are already combining major results on the pitch with potentially decisive moves away from it.
