Peru has introduced a law according to which manipulation of the outcome of a match can lead to imprisonment
The Congress of Peru has approved large-scale reforms of the country's Criminal Code, which establish a number of new rules that will help government agencies and the judicial system in the fight against manipulation of match results. This step was taken to protect Peruvian sports from the growing problem of fraud in the sector.
According to the changes, new penalties and obligations are being introduced for bookmakers, and article 197-A is also being introduced, which establishes specific criminal provisions on match-fixing.
Anyone who directly or indirectly influences the outcome of a sporting event can receive a prison sentence of 3 to 6 years. If a licensed betting operator or an affiliated brand is involved in the manipulation, the term of imprisonment varies from 4 to 8 years.
The innovations apply not only to bookmakers, but also to athletes, referees, coaches, administrators, medical staff, agents and directors of clubs or the federation.
Every licensed bookmaker operating in Peru will have to sign a mandatory official set of rules regarding the prohibition of match-fixing.
