Pep Guardiola leaves Manchester City after historic 10-year era
Pep Guardiola has officially said goodbye to Manchester City after a decade in charge, ending the most successful managerial spell in the club’s history with an emotional farewell speech at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola has officially stepped down as Manchester City manager, bringing an end to a 10-year spell that transformed the club into one of the dominant forces in European football. The club confirmed before the final Premier League match of the season that Guardiola would leave this summer, closing a period that began in 2016 and delivered 20 major trophies.
The Spaniard’s final match came against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium. City lost 2-1, but the result was largely overshadowed by the farewell ceremony and the scale of the tribute paid to the manager. For supporters, the day became less about the final score and more about saying goodbye to the coach who defined the modern identity of the club.
Guardiola addressed the fans after the match in an emotional speech, thanking the players, the staff, the club’s leadership and the supporters for the years they had shared together. He said his time at Manchester City had been the experience of his life and admitted that the journey had been full of emotion, pressure, victories and unforgettable memories.
The farewell also included a major symbolic gesture from the club. Manchester City confirmed that the newly expanded North Stand at the Etihad Stadium would be renamed the Pep Guardiola Stand, while a statue of the Catalan coach will be commissioned near the stand. The tribute reflects Guardiola’s status as the most successful manager in City’s history.
During his decade in Manchester, Guardiola won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, domestic cups and several other trophies. His City side also produced landmark campaigns, including the Centurions season, the domestic treble, the 2022/23 European treble and the record run of four consecutive Premier League titles.
Guardiola explained that he felt it was the right moment to stop, saying the club needed new energy and that he also needed time away from the constant demands of elite football. His departure therefore marks not only the end of a contract, but the end of a footballing cycle that changed Manchester City’s global status.
For City, the next challenge will be succession. Replacing Guardiola will mean more than appointing a new head coach: the club must now preserve the standards, tactical culture and winning mentality he built over 10 years. His farewell speech made clear that the relationship between Guardiola and Manchester City will not end with his final match, but his departure still closes one of the defining chapters of modern English football.
