Parliament of Zambia approves motion to regulate online gambling
Parliament of Zambia has approved a motion proposed by Sunday Chilufya Chanda of Kanchibiya Constituency to enhance the regulation of online gambling in the country.
The motion calls for stricter controls to address the harmful social and economic effects of unregulated online gambling, particularly on young people and vulnerable groups. Chanda proposed the establishment of a centralized authority to regulate all forms of gambling, stricter licensing requirements, robust age verification systems, and spending limits to protect users from financial ruin. He also emphasized the need for public awareness campaigns and accessible support services for those struggling with gambling addiction.
The motion aims to create a safer gambling environment while generating revenue to fund critical national projects such as education, healthcare, and youth empowerment initiatives.
In 2024, Zambia's online gambling landscape is characterized by the growing popularity of sports betting, which is legally recognized under the 2021 Finance Act, while online casinos operate in a regulatory grey area without comprehensive licensing.
