Over half of Nigerians engaged in sports betting in the past 12 months, reports TGM
A staggering 51.7% of Nigerians have placed bets on sports in the past year, according to the latest Gambling and Sports Betting Report Overview by TGM Research. The report provides a detailed analysis of gambling behaviors in Nigeria, highlighting significant trends and participation rates.
The report also highlights the popularity of online and app-based sports betting platforms, with 36.8% of respondents utilizing these channels for wagering on events such as football and horse racing.
While digital platforms have gained traction, traditional forms of betting have not been entirely eclipsed. The report indicates that 26.9% of Nigerians still engage in sports betting among friends, maintaining the social aspect of wagering on events like football and horse racing.
Beyond sports betting, the report also delves into other gambling activities. It reveals that 14.4% of Nigerians participate in lotteries and games of chance, such as Powerball and bingo.
Nigeria's gambling industry operates within a legal framework established by the National Lottery Act of 2005. This legislation not only established the National Lottery but also created the National Lottery Regulatory Commission, tasked with overseeing and managing the industry.
