A new licensing system for online gambling operators is being introduced in Italy. The corresponding decree was recently approved by the government of the country.
According to the contents of the document, the cost of a license for an online gambling operator will be 7 million euros, which will be the maximum value for European countries.
In addition, online operators will be taxed at 3% of income.
The Italian government's decree also aims to protect vulnerable populations, including minors. In accordance with the document, online gambling operators will also transfer 0.2% of their net income to programs aimed at combating problem gambling.
Currently, the cost of an online gambling license in Italy is 200 thousand euros. The multiple increase in license fees has been criticized by companies operating in the country's gambling sector, as well as the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA), which has suggested it will lead to a significant increase in the size of the country's online gambling black market.
However, Italian authorities expect that at least 50 companies will apply for online gambling licenses.
