NLRC urges Nigeria lottery operators to enhance compliance with federal remittances
The National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) has urged Nigerian lottery operators to improve compliance with timely remittances to the Federal Government.
NLRC Director-General, Lanre Gbajabiamila, warned of sanctions against unlicensed online casinos and those failing to remit dues. During a meeting with the Association of Nigerian Bookmakers, challenges in enforcing compliance in Ibadan and Lagos were discussed. Gbajabiamila emphasized that only financially capable operators should remain, and there would be no reductions in casino license fees.
The NLRC clarified that online lottery activities fall under federal authority amid a jurisdictional dispute with Lagos State. Recent crackdowns in Lagos and Ibadan targeted unauthorized online betting, leading to several closures.
The NLRC is the primary regulatory body overseeing lottery and gaming activities in Nigeria, ensuring compliance with national laws and regulations. Its mandate includes fostering a transparent and responsible gaming industry while protecting public interest and ensuring proper remittances to the government.
