Nigeria’s 2025 horse-racing season turns into major weekend economy driver with regulated bets spotlighted
Nigeria’s 2025 horse-racing calendar, featuring marquee events such as the Kaduna International Horse Racing Derby and the Bida Derby, is emerging as a key contributor to regional sports and betting-economy growth, according to the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria (HRFN).
The season, branded under the “Hope Renewed Sahel Savannah Series”, has seen the HRFN expand its weekend-race meets, integrate licensed bookmakers into its flagship events and draw attendees and bettors from Nigeria and neighbouring countries such as Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
At the Kaduna Derby, for example, HRFN and licensed betting operators offered structured fixed-odds wagering across sprints, handicaps and endurance races — a step aimed at formalising betting flows and enhancing tax and regulatory transparency.
Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, said the effort aligns with government goals to make weekend sport a driver of local economic activity: “We don’t want idle venues on weekends… We want sporting events that engage communities and generate economic value.”
For regulated gambling-sector stakeholders, the season signals expanding opportunities: Nigeria’s equestrian sport could offer a growth platform for integrity-compliant betting, race-sponsorship, horse-breeding and tourism-driven revenue streams across West Africa.
