NGB enhances control over illegal online gambling platforms
National Gambling Board (NGB) is alarmed by the growth of illegal online platforms with gambling. The Council called on the South Africans to abandon unlicensed platforms, as the regulators are going to strengthen control over illegal activities in the field of gambling.
The decision to tighten control over illegal platforms with gambling was made due to the fact that such sites are presented as oriented to South African consumers, in fact they do not take into account local legislation and protection of consumer rights, they use aggressive marketing strategy and “quick” winnings that increase the risk of becoming dependent.
Of the measures to combat illegal platforms, we currently know about NGB cooperation with provincial licensing bodies (PLA), law enforcement agencies, financial institutions and Internet providers, in order to eliminate illegal gambling sites. The Council also announced the monitoring of financial transactions to track the financial flow, and they also plan to conduct raids on unlicensed Internet cafes and gambling institutions.
