New Gaming and Lottery Regulations pending publication in Malawi
New gaming and lottery regulations are awaiting publication in Malawi, according to an announcement made on the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) website on May 30.
The report states that after receiving feedback from stakeholders, the authority has incorporated their comments into the new regulations, which are currently pending publication. This shows the commitment of the authority to ensure that all relevant perspectives are considered in the development of these regulations.
In April 2023, the regulator invited written representations under the proposed rules, signaling a transparent and inclusive approach to the regulatory process. The proposed regulations cover a wide range of areas, including Internet Gaming, Gaming and Lotteries Fund, Advertising and Marketing, Gaming, Player Protection, Electronic Monitoring, and Lotteries.
Currently, all gambling operations in Malawi are governed by the Malawi Gambling Act of 1996, and MAGLA is responsible for overseeing and regulating the industry, including the issuance of licenses. The Act allows for various forms of gambling, including casinos, arcades, lotteries, bingo, and sports betting. However, it's important to note that online gambling remains unregulated in Malawi.
The forthcoming publication of the new gaming and lottery regulations marks an important milestone in the evolution of the gambling industry in Malawi. It reflects the authorities' dedication to ensuring a fair and responsible gaming environment for both operators and players alike. By incorporating the comments of stakeholders, the regulations aim to address the evolving needs of the industry and enhance player protection measures.
