Namibia could launch national lottery in next 1-2 years
The Namibia Lotteries Board has confirmed that the country’s first state lottery is in the final stages of preparation and will be launched in the next 1-2 years.
CEO John Shimaneni shared: “Plans to launch a state lottery are in an advanced stage of preparation. We are currently procuring transaction consultancy services to assist with the appointment of a licensed lottery operator under the Lotteries Act”.
The lottery is part of the National Development Plan 6 (NPD6), which runs from 2025 to 2031. The plan aims to deepen economic recovery, inclusiveness and sustainability to ensure quality and positive development for all Namibians
Experts estimate that the lottery could generate over N100 million by 2030. The proceeds from the sale of lottery tickets will be directed to the State Lottery Trust Fund for youth empowerment, health, education and community development
The plan is to introduce a responsible approach to gambling, that is, to raise awareness of the dangers of gambling, especially among young people, to introduce age restrictions and support services.
The industry will be strictly regulated in accordance with legislation and ethical standards. To ensure transparency of the system, a grant funding system is already being developed, independent audits are being carried out and strict reporting requirements are being introduced.
