Namibia combats the spread of gambling addiction
There has been a significant increase in the number of sports betting and gambling platforms in recent times. This undoubtedly raises concerns about their impact on society, especially on vulnerable groups.
At a recent parliamentary session, Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism Indileni confirmed that the country has a strong legislative framework that supports measures to control gambling and betting, and also emphasized that enforcement mechanisms continue to improve. According to her, active implementation of the provisions of the current legislation began in 2021. Since then, the Gambling Board has reviewed more than 280 applications from unlicensed operators. As part of its activities, the Board focuses on both supervisory functions and public awareness activities.
The Gambling and Amusement Control Act, passed in 2018, regulates activities related to sports betting and gambling. Its provisions are aimed at protecting consumers and preventing minors from engaging in gambling. In her speech, Minister Indileni highlighted the consequences of violations, stressing that persons who allow minors to engage in betting or violate other provisions of the law will be subject to administrative or criminal penalties, including a fine of up to N$20,000 or imprisonment for up to two years. These provisions are in place to prevent violations and ensure responsible gambling behaviour.
Obviously, regulations alone will not solve the problem, so the government is working on developing a comprehensive national gambling policy. This policy will aim to develop clear measures to combat gambling addiction and provide assistance to those who suffer from it. Particular attention will be paid to community engagement
