Mozambique attracts $36 million investment through casino concessions

Five casino concessions in Mozambique have successfully attracted investments totaling 2.2 billion meticals (approximately $36 million), as announced by President Filipe Nyusi at the opening of the 10th edition of Fikani, Mozambique’s International Tourism Fair, held in Maputo, according to Lusa.

President Nyusi emphasized that these private sector-driven ventures signify a substantial boost to the tourism industry, with casino and slot machine operations being established in key cities such as Maputo, Beira, Tete, Nampula, Matola, and Pemba.

The operations of casinos in Mozambique are regulated by the National Directorate of Games of Fortune or Chance, which enforces strict guidelines. Concessionaires are required to maintain a minimum share capital of 170.6 million meticals and to invest at least 347.6 million meticals within five years of receiving their license.

Moreover, casinos are subject to a tiered tax structure based on the duration of their concessions. The tax rates are set at 20% for concessions lasting up to 14 years, 25% for those up to 19 years, 30% for 20 to 24 years, and 35% for concessions of 25 to 30 years.

Additionally, operators must pay a Stamp Duty amounting to 50% of the entrance ticket price to the casinos.
