Mikel Arteta becomes first former Premier League player to win title as manager

Arsenal’s first Premier League title since 2004 has also produced a rare managerial milestone: Mikel Arteta has become the first former Premier League player to win the competition as a head coach.

Mikel Arteta has added a new chapter to Premier League history after guiding Arsenal to their first English league title in 22 years. The Gunners were confirmed as champions after Manchester City drew 1-1 with Bournemouth, leaving Arsenal four points clear with only one match remaining.

The achievement is especially significant because Arteta is not only Arsenal’s manager, but also a former Premier League player. The Premier League’s official records list him as having made 284 appearances, scoring 41 goals and providing 42 assists during his playing career with Everton and Arsenal. He later returned to Arsenal as manager in December 2019.

This title makes Arteta the first former Premier League player to win the competition as a manager. Previous Premier League-winning managers included Sir Alex Ferguson, Kenny Dalglish, Arsène Wenger, José Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini, Claudio Ranieri, Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola, Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot. None of them had played in the Premier League era before becoming champions as managers.

The title also continues another unusual Premier League trend: since the competition was launched in 1992, no English manager has won it. The list of title-winning coaches has included managers from Scotland, France, Portugal, Italy, Chile, Germany, the Netherlands and now Spain, but still no English head coach.

For Arsenal, the symbolism is strong. Arteta played for the club from 2011 to 2016, captained the team and later returned during a difficult period in the club’s modern history. After several seasons of rebuilding and repeated title challenges, he has now delivered the trophy that had been missing since Arsène Wenger’s “Invincibles” season in 2003/04.

The achievement strengthens Arteta’s status as one of the defining managers of the current Premier League era. Arsenal’s title ends Manchester City’s recent dominance and gives the club a platform for an even bigger finish to the season, with the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain still ahead.
