MGM China launches playing-card upcycling drive with Macau tech partner
MGM China has rolled out a new recycling and upcycling program for used playing cards in partnership with local company Fnetlink Technology, positioning the initiative as the first fully localized end-to-end system of its kind in Macau’s casino sector.
MGM China said the program is designed to turn discarded playing cards into eco-friendly packaging materials instead of treating them as waste. According to the company and regional gaming media, the system processes used cards through an automated shredding line and then converts the material into high-quality recycled fibers at a local factory, using a dry regeneration process that does not require water.
The operator says the project builds on work that began in 2023, when MGM and Fnetlink started co-developing an automated card-shredding solution. The broader recycling partnership was first announced in March 2025, and the latest rollout marks a shift from concept to operational implementation in Macau.
Once fully implemented, the system is expected to recycle and upcycle around 3,000 tons of used playing cards per year, with MGM targeting a 100% recycling rate for this material stream. That gives the initiative relevance beyond corporate sustainability messaging: in a market where casino waste volumes are significant, MGM is presenting resource recovery and local processing as part of a wider push toward greener, more diversified economic activity in Macau. This final point is an inference based on the company’s stated goals and the scale of the project.
The launch also reflects a broader industry trend in which casino operators are trying to connect environmental targets with operational efficiency and local industrial partnerships. For Macau, the significance lies not only in the reuse of gaming materials, but in the fact that a concessionaire is trying to keep the full recycling chain inside the city rather than sending the waste elsewhere for processing.
