Manchester United plot midfield overhaul in 2026 with Conor Gallagher on radar

The Red Devils are reportedly setting their sights on a wide-ranging midfield refresh in 2026, with Conor Gallagher of Atlético Madrid named among the priority targets, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Manchester United are preparing for a significant transformation in the heart of their squad as they look ahead to 2026. With Casemiro’s contract expiring next summer and uncertainty surrounding the future of Kobbie Mainoo, Rúben Amorim’s squad plans include bolstering the midfield with fresh talent.

According to Romano, Gallagher has been under United’s radar since August and remains “an option in case Atlético decide to open the door to a loan move”.While United may prefer a loan structure for January, Atlético Madrid are said to favour a permanent deal.

The planning signifies more than just one signing — United understand that to meet the demands of Amorim’s style, midfield recruits must bring pace, intensity and adaptability. Gallagher, who moved to Atlético for approximately £34 million in 2024, fits part of the profile but the club are reportedly also considering other targets including those in the overseas market.

For the gambling and sports-business audience, the implications range across player market valuation, shifting squad dynamics, and betting markets tied to transfer rumours and arrival announcements. With Gallagher one of the names to watch, United’s midfield strategy for 2026 is now firmly in the spotlight.
