Manchester City Pull Clear as Brentford, Villa and Coventry Light Up Premier League Matchweek 5

Manchester City maintained their perfect start in an eight-goal thriller, Brentford stunned Chelsea, Aston Villa finally got their first league win and Coventry celebrated a historic victory as an eventful fifth Premier League matchweek reshaped both ends of the table.

Manchester City emerged as the biggest winners of Matchweek 5, beating Sunderland 5-3 at the Etihad Stadium to make it five victories from five and move three points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey produced one of the weekend's most remarkable individual performances by scoring a hat-trick — the club's first in the Premier League since Jermain Defoe in 2016 — but still finished on the losing side. Antoine Semenyo scored twice for City before Erling Haaland added the fifth, taking the champions to 15 points from a possible 15. 

One of the biggest shocks came on Friday as Brentford demolished Chelsea 3-0. Jaidon Anthony broke the deadlock after the interval, Igor Thiago doubled the advantage and Fábio Carvalho completed the victory in stoppage time. It was Brentford's first home league win over Chelsea since 1938 and extended the Blues' winless Premier League run to three matches. 

Aston Villa also secured an important breakthrough with a 3-2 victory at Tottenham. Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emiliano Buendía put Villa three goals ahead before Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke scored late for Spurs. The goals were Tottenham's first in the Premier League this season, but Roberto De Zerbi's side remain without a win and sit bottom of the table with two points. Villa, meanwhile, collected their first league victory of the campaign. 

Coventry City recorded an even more historic result. Jay Dasilva scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, giving Coventry their first Premier League victory in 25 years. Forest thought they had equalised through Igor Jesus late on, but VAR recommended an on-field review and the goal was disallowed for a foul in the build-up. 

Newcastle responded to their heavy defeat at Leeds by beating previously unbeaten Hull City 2-1. Joe Willock and Lewis Hall struck inside the opening seven minutes, while Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back after the break. Yoane Wissa also missed a Newcastle penalty before the hosts held on to move to eight points. 

Everton continued their unbeaten start with a 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town, Thierno Barry scoring the winner in the 11th minute. Barry later had another effort ruled out following a VAR review, while Ipswich finished with ten men after Abdul Fatawu received a second yellow card. Everton ended the round on nine points. 

Liverpool also reached nine points after beating Bournemouth 1-0 on Andoni Iraola's return to his former club. Alexander Isak scored the only goal in the second half, his fourth league goal of the campaign, as Liverpool extended their unbeaten domestic start and recorded another clean sheet. 

Manchester United, meanwhile, needed an 89th-minute deflected Matheus Cunha strike to rescue a 1-1 draw at Fulham after Lisandro Martínez had inadvertently put the hosts ahead. United have only five points from their opening five matches — their joint-lowest total at this stage of a Premier League season. Leeds and Crystal Palace played out the weekend's only goalless draw, with a Palace goal overturned for offside as Leeds preserved their unbeaten start. 

Brighton's 3-0 victory over Arsenal, which ended the champions' nine-match Premier League winning streak, completed a difficult weekend for several of the traditional heavyweights. After five rounds, Manchester City lead with 15 points, Arsenal have 12 and Brighton sit third on 10, while Brentford, Leeds, Liverpool and Everton are all on nine. At the other end, Tottenham are bottom with two points, behind Fulham and Coventry.
