Manchester City go top of the Premier League for the first time since Matchweek 1

Manchester City have returned to the top of the Premier League table for the first time since the opening round of the season after following their win over Arsenal with a narrow but decisive victory at Burnley.

City’s rise to first place was completed with a 1-0 away win over Burnley on 22 April, sealed by an early Erling Haaland goal. The result lifted Pep Guardiola’s side above Arsenal after the two clubs moved level on 70 points, with City taking first place on goals scored while both teams remain level on goal difference at +37.

The shift at the top has been sharp. Only days earlier, City had beaten Arsenal 2-1 in the direct title clash, and the official Premier League title-race update says those back-to-back wins cut Arsenal’s advantage from six points to zero. After spending 200 consecutive days at the summit, Arsenal have now dropped to second.

What makes the moment especially notable is the timing. Manchester City had not led the league since the opening week of the 2025/26 campaign, but with five matches left they now control the title race from the front. The table currently shows City first and Arsenal second, both on 70 points from 33 matches.

For City, the latest win is about more than three points. It confirms that their familiar late-season surge has arrived again at exactly the right moment. For Arsenal, the pressure has now completely flipped: after holding first place for most of the season, they are suddenly chasing again in the run-in. If City maintain this pace, this week may be remembered as the point when the title race truly turned.
