MAGLA Donates K20 Million to NPL Mothers Fun Run
The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has supported the Nation Publications Limited (NPL) Mothers’ Fun Run by donating K20 million (approximately €10,000).
The Mothers’ Fun Run (MFR) has been held annually for the past 20 years to support safe motherhood. The initiative aims to save the lives of mothers and babies during childbirth by equipping health facilities with special equipment.
The event will be held in October. The support from MAGLA goes a long way in supporting maternal and newborn health in local communities and health facilities.
MAGLA CEO, Raheel Midjiga, issued a statement after receiving the cheque, praising the initiative for its role in ensuring safe motherhood in the country. “Maternal mortality has dropped from 634 per 100 000 live births ten years ago to 225 today, while infant mortality has fallen from 34 to 29.4 per 1 000 live births. This did not happen in a vacuum. NPL has been there, mobilising partners and informing people,” said Raheel Midjiga. She added: “We have seen improvements in both infant mortality and maternal deaths. Mothers are the backbone of society, and children’s early development is critical. It is therefore important for individuals and companies to contribute towards safe motherhood for the sustainability of Malawi,”.
The Nation’s Editor, Aubrey Mchulu, thanked MAGLA for the donation, acknowledging them as a trusted partner whose help will bring the company a step closer to achieving the goal of zero maternal deaths in the country.
