Liverpool pressure grows after Manchester City thrashing as Arne Slot’s future comes under scrutiny
Liverpool’s 4–0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals has sharply intensified pressure around Arne Slot, with Sky Sports reporting that the squad held an emergency meeting as the club fights to protect a top-five Premier League finish and keep its Champions League campaign alive.
Liverpool’s latest setback came on April 4, when Manchester City beat them 4–0 in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick, Antoine Semenyo also found the net, and Mohamed Salah had a penalty saved as Slot’s side exited the competition in emphatic fashion. In his post-match reaction published by the club, Slot questioned his team’s fighting spirit and said there was a troubling pattern to the goals Liverpool were conceding.
The fallout has gone beyond the result itself. Sky Sports’ Paper Talk reported that Liverpool players, not the club hierarchy, held an emergency meeting after the defeat as concern mounted over the team’s collapse in form. Virgil van Dijk then publicly apologized to supporters and said the team had “let the manager down,” underlining how serious the mood around Anfield has become.
The wider context explains why the pressure is growing so quickly. Reuters reported before the FA Cup loss that Liverpool were fifth in the Premier League with 49 points, while also having reached the Champions League quarter-finals, where they are due to face Paris Saint-Germain. Sky Sports has separately said Liverpool’s end-of-season run could shape Slot’s future, and Slot himself said in February that there were “no guarantees” he would remain if the club failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Slot took charge in 2024 and guided Liverpool to the 2024–25 Premier League title, but the current season has turned into a much harder test. Reuters has described Liverpool as defending champions, and recent results have left the club in a battle not for silverware on multiple fronts, but for stability, a Champions League place and belief in the current project. With a quarter-final in Europe still ahead, the next matches are likely to determine whether this heavy defeat becomes a turning point or the moment the pressure around Slot becomes overwhelming.
