Kenya's National Assembly rejects Senate amendments to Gambling Control Bill
Members of the National Assembly have officially rejected the Senate's amendments to the Gambling Control Bill (National Assembly Bill No. 70 of 2023), as reported on their official account on X.
On January 16, 2025, the National Assembly cited constitutional inconsistencies, duplication of roles, and overlap with recently enacted tax laws as reasons for their decision. Lawmakers noted that several amendments proposed by the Senate had already been addressed under the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act, 2024. Additionally, some proposals were found to conflict with both the Constitution and existing statutes.Key provisions of the Gambling Control Bill include:
- Establishment of a new regulatory authority to replace the current Betting, Control and Licensing Board (BCLB).
- Stricter regulations for betting, casinos, and other forms of gambling.
- Increased taxes on gambling activities.
- Stricter measures to combat underage gambling.
