Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi wins Olympic gold in men's 800m
Kenyan prodigy Emmanuel Wanyonyi has etched his name in Olympic history by clinching the men's 800m gold medal at the Paris 2024 Games.
At just 20 years old, Wanyonyi becomes the youngest athlete ever to secure Olympic gold in the 800m, achieving this milestone with a stunning time of 1:41.19 at the Stade de France. This victory adds to his growing list of accomplishments, following his silver medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, where he finished second to Canada's Marco Arop. In a thrilling Olympic final, Wanyonyi narrowly edged out Arop, who finished a mere 0.01 seconds behind at 1:41.20, while Algeria's Djamel Sejati claimed the bronze with a time of 1:41.50.
Kenya’s dominance in the men's 800m continues, with Wanyonyi carrying on the legacy of past Olympic champions like David Rudisha and Emmanuel Korir, who have kept the gold in Kenyan hands for the last four Games.
