The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has warned TV and radio broadcasters to reduce their betting, lottery, and gambling content within 14 days, or risk losing their licenses. Director General David Mugonyi expressed concern over the growing number of consumer complaints about the prevalence of betting-related programming. The CA reminded broadcasters of their responsibility under the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998, to provide content that serves community needs, maintains decency, and ensures truthful advertising.
Mugonyi noted that many broadcasters are exceeding the approved limits for gambling content, violating the Licence Conditions and Programming Code. The CA also highlighted violations regarding child protection and advertising standards. Broadcasters must address these issues within the 14-day deadline, or face strict enforcement, including potential license revocation.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over the impact of gambling, particularly on youths. Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has called for action against rogue betting operators, urging the public to help address gambling addiction, which has led to financial and mental health issues. The CA’s directive emphasizes the urgent need for broadcasters to comply with regulatory standards.
