Kenya bans celebrities from gambling ads under new rules
Kenya's Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has banned celebrities, influencers, and content creators from gambling advertisements following the end of a 30-day advertising suspension. The new rules, announced May 29, aim to protect minors and promote responsible gambling.
All gambling ads now require BCLB approval and Kenya Film Classification Board classification before publication. Advertisements are prohibited near schools, places of worship, and other child-accessible areas. Ads must display license numbers, contact details, and responsible gambling messages while avoiding glamorizing betting or presenting it as reliable income.
The measures address rising gambling participation among young Kenyans. A multi-agency task force including various government bodies supports the regulations to safeguard public interests.
While welcomed by some as anti-problem gambling measures, the Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya (DCCAK) has criticized the decision, arguing influencers weren't consulted and could help promote responsible gambling messages. DCCAK is seeking dialogue for a more inclusive approach balancing public safety with the creative economy.
