Indian online gaming sector sees $822 million revenue surge after GST implementation
India's implementation of a 28% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on online gaming has led to a remarkable revenue increase, generating ₹6,909 crore (approximately $822 million) in just six months. This significant rise marks a 412% boost compared to the previous six-month period, during which the government collected around ₹1,349 crore ($160 million).
The tax, effective from October 1, 2023, was introduced during the 50th GST Council meeting and applies to both skill-based and chance-based online games. The revenue surge indicates that players likely deposited nearly $3 billion into Indian online gaming platforms during this timeframe. Additionally, revenue from the casino sector also experienced growth, rising by 30% to reach $25 million.
Despite the impressive revenue figures, concerns remain regarding the long-term effects of the high tax rate on the industry and its players. The government’s decision to maintain the 28% GST has been met with mixed reactions from industry stakeholders, with many calling for a reassessment of the tax structure to foster growth in this rapidly expanding market.
