India Cuts $5.56 Billion in Gaming Tax Demands Following Supreme Court Ruling
Indian tax authorities have reduced tax demands against three major online gaming companies by 75.4%, cutting their combined liabilities by approximately $5.56 billion following a Supreme Court ruling.
India's tax authorities have significantly reduced Goods and Services Tax (GST) demands against three major gaming companies: Sporta Technologies, operator of Dream11, Gameskraft Technologies and Play Games 24x7.
According to adjudication orders reviewed by Exchange4media, the combined principal tax demands have fallen from approximately ₹70,213 crore (7.4billion)to₹17,298crore(1.82 billion), representing a reduction of ₹52,915 crore, or 75.4%.
The reassessment follows a Supreme Court ruling issued on May 27, 2026, which upheld the legality of GST on online gaming transactions while clarifying how taxable amounts should be calculated.
The court determined that taxation should be based on qualifying player deposits rather than repeatedly counting winnings reinvested in subsequent games. This distinction substantially reduced the taxable amounts calculated by authorities.
Sporta Technologies received the largest absolute reduction of approximately ₹21,603 crore, followed by Gameskraft with ₹16,102 crore and Play Games 24x7 with ₹15,210 crore.
However, the companies still face considerable financial obligations. The revised amounts exclude interest, while Gameskraft and Play Games 24x7 have also been assessed penalties equivalent to their confirmed principal tax liabilities.
The decision represents an important development in India's long-running dispute over online gaming taxation. Although the companies remain liable for substantial payments, the revised calculations provide greater clarity on tax valuation and could influence the resolution of similar disputes involving other gaming businesses.
