Google May Allow RMG Apps to Be Allowed on Play Store as Part of WinZO Settlement
Google is set to make changes to its real-money gaming policies. The decision comes amid an ongoing investigation by the Competition Commission of India (CCI), which has raised concerns that Google is selectively barring RMG apps from its platform.
Google is proposing to allow all RMG games that developers themselves deem legitimate online real-money games that comply with the law to be hosted and distributed in India. However, developers will also need to obtain a certification from a reputable third party that the app is a “game of skill” and not a game of chance. The reputable third party in this case could even be industry associations such as the All India Gaming Federation, the Electronic Gaming Federation, or the Fantasy Sports Federation of India.
Within 120 days of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) approval, Google will allow such games on the Play Store, and the changes to the advertising policy itself will come into effect 150 days after the regulator's order On the one hand, such an innovation will stimulate the economy and create competition, but on the other hand, India's regulatory framework in the gambling sector, in the future, may not keep up with the changes associated with innovations in the field of RMG, which is now available to everyone. And what is important, opening access to such games, there is a high chance of
increasing addictions among vulnerable groups of the population and the beginning of a silent epidemic of gambling addiction.
