Google Expands Gambling Advertising Eligibility to Six Nigerian States
Google has expanded its gambling advertising policy in Nigeria, allowing appropriately licensed operators to apply for advertising certification in Enugu and Imo states from October 14, 2026, bringing the total number of eligible states to six.
Google has expanded the geographical availability of online gambling advertising in Nigeria by adding Enugu and Imo to the list of states where licensed operators can qualify for Google Ads certification.
The policy update took effect on October 14, 2026, increasing the number of eligible Nigerian states to six: Cross River, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Lagos and Oyo.
Under the revised rules, companies targeting Enugu must provide a valid licence issued by the Enugu State Gaming and Lottery Commission (ESGLC). Advertisers targeting Imo must hold authorisation from the Imo State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (ISLGA).
The policy covers several categories of online gambling content, including sports betting, bingo, fantasy sports, lotteries, online casino games and other qualifying gaming services.
However, eligibility is not automatic. Operators must obtain appropriate state-level authorisation and successfully complete Google's gambling advertising certification process before promoting their services.
The update reflects Nigeria's state-based gambling regulatory environment, where licensing requirements can vary between jurisdictions.
Google also announced a separate change to its certification procedures in October, gradually allowing some advertisers to submit gambling certification applications directly through their Google Ads accounts. Existing certifications and pending applications remain unaffected.
For gambling operators, marketing agencies and technology providers, the expanded policy creates additional advertising opportunities in eligible Nigerian states while maintaining strict compliance requirements.
The development highlights the growing importance of regional licensing in digital gambling marketing. Companies seeking to advertise across Nigeria must continue verifying both local legal requirements and Google's platform-specific policies before launching campaigns.
