GNLU report calls for unified regulation of India’s booming online gaming industry
India’s online gaming industry is booming, with over 500 million gamers, making it the second-largest market globally, just behind China. However, a recent report from the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) underscores the urgent need for a cohesive legal framework to govern this rapidly expanding sector.
The report, titled “Evaluating Blanket Bans and Mandatory Limits in Gaming,” highlights significant challenges related to user safety and financial risks due to the lack of comprehensive regulations. It advocates for a balanced approach that safeguards users while fostering economic growth within the industry.
Drawing comparisons with other countries, the report suggests that India should implement licensing systems and operator responsibilities similar to those seen internationally. It also recommends establishing a central regulatory body to ensure compliance and promote responsible gaming practices.
A unified legal framework, the report argues, would replace the current patchwork of state regulations, creating a safer and more consistent gaming environment.
Key recommendations from the report include the introduction of uniform central regulations, mandatory limit-setting for players, a risk minimization strategy, and the use of evidence-based policy interventions.
